Boom-gate access can use credentials, intercom release or automatic number plate recognition. ANPR reads a plate as a vehicle identifier; it does not prove who is driving, that the plate is genuine or that only one vehicle passed.
Where this approach fits
Use plate recognition where hands-free vehicle flow has a clear benefit and plate data can be governed appropriately. Staff, visitors, couriers and emergency services need different enrolment and fallback methods. Consider trailers, motorcycles, temporary vehicles and hire cars.
Design the complete opening and interface
Camera position, lane geometry, speed, lighting, glare, plate condition and queuing affect recognition. Coordinate boom safety loops, photoelectric devices, operator controls and manual release with the gate contractor. Keep pedestrians out of vehicle-control lanes.
Plan safety, failure and exceptions
Plan unreadable plates, duplicate or changed plates, tailgating, service outage, power failure and an authorised vehicle arriving before its booking. Never weaken boom safety devices to improve throughput. Plate records may be personal information and require controlled purpose, access and retention.
Administration and ongoing ownership
Authorise plate enrolment, set expiry for visitors and contractors, and review former staff vehicles. Measure actual read and exception rates after commissioning. Maintain cameras, lighting and lane markings as well as the database.

Design the exception workflow
